Hey there, health enthusiasts! At least I guess you are one, given you’ve made your way to this article.  Today, we're diving deep into the world of personalised Naturopathic consultations – because your health journey is as unique as you are!

My Naturopathic Consultation Process:

Embarking on a 1:1 Naturopathic consultation is a comprehensive process where every aspect of each patient’s life is considered. Once consultation dates are confirmed, patient's receive two forms to complete (many of which are tick boxes). These can also alert them to areas they hadn’t realised were not optimal. Often this can be because people just accept various areas of dys-function as their “new norm”, or excuse it as “part of ageing”, but that doesn’t need to be the case. These forms aren't your standard paperwork – they're the beginning of a conversation, a chance for you to share your story. We go through these together, creating a space for you to express the nuances of your health journey.

The consultation programme includes the following.

Comprehensive Assessment:

  • Any known family history

  • Understanding your personal history

    • this may include trauma, infections, exposure to heavy metals, toxins or mould, illnesses overseas … there are many things that affect your health

  • Physical health

  • Emotional well-being

  • Dietary habits

  • Lifestyle factors

What is Naturopathy?

Alright, let's demystify Naturopathy, shall we? Naturopathic medicine distinguishes itself from traditional (allopathic) health approaches. While allopathic medicine’s focus* is on “naming and shaming” (diagnosing) diseases and then “taming” (prescribing drugs) to manage symptoms, Naturopathy takes a holistic route. It supports your body's ability to heal itself, aiming not just to alleviate symptoms but to uncover the root causes of health issues, which we will address together. Naturopathy emphasises prevention, treatment, and optimal health through therapeutic products (such as nutritional supplements or herbs). 

It's about embracing you as the powerhouse you are – body, mind, and spirit in harmonious sync - not just an isolated set of symptoms.

And if you haven't picked up already, another critical part of Naturopathy is appreciating that everyone has come to their current challenges from a very individual perspective. Therefore, we treat everyone accordingly, recognising that one size doesn't fit all.

  • Before I get shot down for comments about allopathic medicine, I just want to note that drugs are sometimes necessary despite their possible side effects, and I have the utmost respect for primary healthcare providers. Recognising the value they bring in acute and critical situations is crucial. 

  • However, it's also worth noting that a significant portion of chronic diseases, roughly 80%, can be preventable through positive changes in diet and lifestyle. This emphasises the role natural health modalities, like Naturopathy, can play in proactively addressing and preventing chronic health issues.

* Our First Engagement: 'The Wellness Kickstart’

This pivotal phase of your health journey begins with a strategic 2-consultation package aptly named "The Wellness Kickstart." Between our two sessions, I thoroughly research and analyse the information collected, incorporating any test results. This process allows me to 'crunch the numbers' and develop a personalised Wellness Plan tailored to your unique health needs, ready for presentation during our second session.

Your Wellness Plan discusses the implications of any test results we’ve been able to get by this time, potential underlying causes of your dysfunction, short- and longer-term goals, and then diet and lifestyle recommendations to get you started. This needs to be done in incremental steps, otherwise, it’s simply too overwhelming.

You’ll also likely be given a prescription for supplements or herbs to help support your body’s return to optimal health, and as discussed already, sometimes functional testing can be advantageous. Supplements and functional tests are always optional - we will always be ‘food as medicine’ first, and can start simply with diet and lifestyle, if you prefer.

Continuing Your Wellness Journey:

After "The Wellness Kickstart," it is generally necessary to maintain regular check-ins. If your health could make a radical turn-around after just two consultations, then we’d both be ecstatic; however, for most, their dis-function/s or dis-ease/s have been around for some months, often years, so it takes time for the body to ‘heal’ and get back on track.

Initially, I recommend meeting every two to three weeks, then monthly, as you steadily achieve your health goals. As you know, it’s individual - some people need more support than others. Also, as alluded to earlier, the more prepared you are to ‘put in the work’, however small those changes may be, the faster you will see results.

My role is to empower you as the CEO of your health, but you could think of me as much like your general manager, ensuring that you have the guidance and insights needed to steer your health journey successfully. We work collaboratively to achieve your health goals.

Once you have done this, you may enjoy a semi-regular catch-up to “check in” and keep your health goals on track. To this end, I suggest a 6-monthly or annual appointment.
